Buhari, APC and the road to 2019

By Abiodun KOMOLAFE … All things considered, I think Nigeria has been punched into coma and only God can bring her back to life! From the man who opted for a bag of rice in exchange for his son; to the pregnant woman who stole N300.00 to answer the call of a normal symptom of pregnancy, there is a rise in Nigeria’s socio-political temperature and no one really knows where Nigeria is headed. Warningly, inflation rate is on the high side and our Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate is unsmiling either. From the cosmetic to the substantive, politicians have chopped our country into pieces with each of the parts selfishly kept to themselves even as the gladiators continue to fight in another person’s corner. Dollar gets worse with each passing day, which in turn deeply traumatizes the fortunes of our country. Even as a Buharist whose fierce support for ‘Change’ has been unflinching, I believe it’s time government clipped the wings of this trajectory of sh...

We had no hand in your defeat, UK replies Jonathan.

Image
The British Government has denied involvement in any act, during Nigeria’s 2015 presidential election, which aided General Muhammadu Buhari to win then incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan. The government of Britain stated this in response to Jonathan’s claim in a new book launched on Friday “Against the Run of Play…,” that the country’s former Prime Minister David Cameron, worked concertedly with United States of America (USA) ex-President Barak Obama and France to ensure he was removed from office. However, the British High Commission in Nigeria in a statement on Friday signed by the Press and Public Affairs Officer, Mr. Joe Abuku, said Britain should not be blamed for the outcome of the election, adding that it was entirely the decision of Nigerians. The statement read, “Prior to the 2015 elections in Nigeria, the UK engaged with Nigerian political parties and their leaders to urge them to run a fair, non-violent campaign and allow Nigerian voters to dec...

Despite return of cash, document, police insist Goje risks being arrested.

Image
Although the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) was said to have returned several cash and documents taken away after raiding the Abuja home of Senator Danjuma Goje, the Force has however insisted that he must appear before ongoing investigation into the matter or risk arrest. Following the raid of the lawmaker representing Gombe-Central senatorial district, the Senate had given the police 24 hours to return documents it took from the home of the senator which was capable of delaying passage of the 2017 budget. While the documents have been returned, the Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Jimoh Moshood, during an interview on a TV programme, called on Goje to appear before police investigation panel which he said was still ongoing. The investigators according to him are probing all the recovery that was made in the Senator’s house “and it is important that nobody be allowed to cast aspersion on the investigation of police to pervert the course of justice,” he not...

After one and half yrs in detention, Kanu finally leaves Kuje prison.

Image
After spending a year and six months in Kuje Prison Abuja, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on Friday left Kuje prison. Kanu was arrested by Nigeria security operatives in October 2015 and has remained in prison till he was granted bail this Friday. The Abuja Federal High Court had on Thursday granted him bail on health basis and denied the three other members of the group detained alongside Kanu bail. His lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, disclosed that Kanu having met the bail condition, which many Nigerians described as stringent, was released shortly after all necessary documents were signed by the trial judge. Kanu reportedly left the prison at about 5pm. Kanu, along with three others yet to be granted bail are being prosecuted on alleged offences bordering on treasonable charges.

Buhari still recovering, taking things slowly on doctor’s advice –Presidency.

Image
The Presidency has explained that President Muhammadu has not been up and about due to advice by his doctors that he must take things slowly to allow for full recovery from the illness that kept him in London for 49 days. The Presidency therefore asked Nigerians to understand that “full recovery is sometimes a slow process, requiring periods of rest and relaxation. This was contained in a statement the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on media and publicity, Garba Shehu, released on Thursday, adding that despite the insinuations of a number of “media organisations, there is no need for apprehension over the health of our President, Muhammadu Buhari.” He further explained that President Buhari’s absence at the Federal Executive Council meeting of Wednesday, April 26, was a last minute decision, “otherwise, the cabinet and the public might have been alerted in advance”. The statement read, “As eager as he is to be up and about, the President...

More speculations over Buhari’s health as president is absent at Friday Juma’at prayer.

Image
The absence of President Muhammadu Buhari at Friday’s Juma’at prayer at the Presidential Vila, Abuja, seems to have fueled already heightened speculations that all may not be well with Nigeria’s number one citizen. The president who only recently returned to the country after spending about 50 days on a medical vacation in London, has for three consecutive weeks missed out on the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meetings. Although President Buhari has been unable to attend recent FEC meetings or any public functions, he has however, never failed to observe Juma’at prayer inside a mosque near his office at the Presidential Villa, since he stopped attending the service at the National Mosque, Abuja. During this Friday’s prayers, governors of Ogun, Zamfara and Kano, Ibikunle Amosun, Abdulaziz Yari and Abdullahi Ganduje respectively, who came to join Buhari for the prayers, were present, but the president was nowhere near the mosque. The presidency wa...

COMRADE USMAN OKAI AUSTIN CFR AND THE CHARGES OF SEDITION

Image
BY OCHO BABA… It is no longer news that Comrade Usman Okai Austin who earned for himself the title CFR (Certified Feather Ruffler) was on Sunday 9th April 2017 taken incognito by men with two Hilux vehicles in a gestapo style who were later confirmed to be members of the dreaded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). My regular comic tonics have been truncated albeit temporarily. For a comedian that has been taken too seriously by the State with an inscription on his Facebook timeline that looks like a plate number inscription that reads “INSURED BY MAFIA” with a sub “YOU HIT ME,WE HIT YOU”. The reason he was so clandestinely ambushed was not immediately known until he was arraigned before the Kogi State Magistrate Court in Lokoja on Tuesday 11th April 2017 on the following trumped up charges namely: 1. Inciting the society against the Government of Kogi State. 2. Causing disappearance of evidence, handsets. 3. Conspired with some criminal elements to burn IGR hous...

Disregard mischief makers, Kogi not owing workers –Gov Bello

Kogi State government has denied allegation that it is yet to pay workers’ salaries of some months and claimed that, instead it has paid up to March 2017. It said it was based on this issue that the state government decided to publish details of salaries paid to each public servant since the inception of the present administration on January 27, 2016. This was disclosed to newsmen in the state capital Lokoja by the director general on media and publicity to Governor Yahaya Bello, Kingsley Fanwo. He said, “The governor does not owe workers who have been verified to be genuine and consequently cleared.” According to Fanwo, the outcry over non-payment was coming from “fraudulent beneficiaries of the ghost workers syndrome who have been cut off the system.” He claimed that Governor Bello did not only clear the arrears he met at inception, but has been up to date with salaries. “It is unfortunate that mischief makers have been brandishing fake news about Kogi State as ...

CSOs question Justice Nyako’s bail condition to IPOB leader Kanu

Image
A coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have queried the basis warranting the Tuesday bail condition Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja, granted the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu. Those who signed the statement were Eze Onyekpere of CSJ, Dr Sam Amadi MF, Benedict Ezeagu SNG, Princewill Akpakpan LC, Okere Nnamdi KHRF, Ibuchukwu Ezike CLO, Chris Nwadigo PRO, Dede Uzor CD, and Mathew Edaghese ARI. Group threatens mass protest if Buhari misses another FEC meeting.

Image
Following President Muhammadu Buhari’s absence at the last two Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, a civil society group, Change the Change Coalition, on Thursday said it will massively protest should Buhari fail to show up at the next FEC meeting. There have been growing concerns over President Buhari’s health issue. His absence from three consecutive FEC meetings as well as absence from public functions, while only being seen on Fridays during prayers at the Presidential Villa, has also not helped matters. Following this, the group argued that Buhari should rather officially transmit power to his vice, Yemi Osinbajo, as he did during his 49 days medical trip to London, instead of keeping away from work. This was stated by the national coordinator of CCC, Mazi Bismarck Oji, during a news conference in Enugu. He added that the current intrigues surrounding Buhari’s health could be likened to the situation that prevailed in the Presidential Villa during the time of...
